He is also a proud Barker parent of two children by adoption\, a role that deeply shapes his commitment to family\, legacy\, and community\, including his service on the Board of Directors of The Friends of Barker. Rooted in decades of mentoring and late-night conversations over chili fries\, Ben knows firsthand what it means to carry—and confront—the weight of trauma\, violence\, and loss that so many endure. \nTogether with his family\, he helped transform his family’s legendary Ben’s Chili Bowl into a symbol of community\, resilience\, and hope in Washington\, D.C. Rooted in decades of mentoring and late-night conversations over chili fries\, Ben knows firsthand what it means to carry and confront the weight of trauma\, violence\, and loss that so many Black men endure. \nIn his recently published book\, Ascend: The Black Man’s Guide to Elevation\, Success\, and Purpose\, Ben cuts through the noise to deliver the unfiltered tools he has lived and taught. While written through the lens of Black male experience\, Ben’s message speaks to people of all backgrounds\, offering universal insights about identity\, healing\, resilience\, and purpose. His work holds particular relevance for the adoption community\, where themes of loss\, belonging\, self-definition\, and breaking generational cycles resonate deeply. With candid insight\, Ben shows readers how to own their stories\, confront pain\, and build a life blueprint that no street corner\, circumstance\, or setback can take away. \nFrom the mustard-seed faith that carried him from a challenging childhood in a historic Black neighborhood to leading one of the most iconic community institutions in the nation’s capital\, Ben speaks as an older brother—honest about setbacks and unwavering in his belief that gratitude\, affirmation\, and community can turn pain into power. Ascend offers hard-earned wisdom and invaluable lessons to guide the next generation—and all who seek growth—toward greatness. \nToday\, Ben’s mission is to uplift and empower young people through job training\, mentorship\, and community engagement. Widely respected as a grassroots leader\, he continues to create real change in the lives of those around him. In Ascend\, Ben challenges readers—whether sixteen or thirty-six—to dream boldly\, break generational cycles\, and build a legacy that speaks louder than any eulogy. This is your spark. It is up to you to ignite the flame. \nBenAliMotivation.com \nTheAscendBook.com \nben@benalimotivation.com \nIG | X | Facebook | YouTube | TikTok >> @benalimotivation \nSession One:\n1A. This workshop\, led by an adoption professional and mother of eight (seven of whom were adopted from foster care)\, will explore what families may experience after their children come home. Participants will gain ideas and specific strategies that make the adjustments from being a “waiting” parent to “parenting” parent much easier. The session is recommended for those considering and/or already parenting children adopted at an older age. \n \nDebbie SchuggWorkshop leader \nSession Two:\n2A. SUMMARY:Understanding and Supporting the Needs of Children in Foster Care: Guidance for Secondary Caregivers
DESCRIPTION:January 30th from 12:00 – 1:00 PM ET on Zoom \nYou are invited to join us as we kick off our 2026 Barker professional training series with this FREE one-hour lunch and learn webinar.   Please use the link below to register and share with your networks. This webinar will earn you 1 CAT II CEU and will be a helpful resource to those working with foster and adoptive parents as they work to build their support systems. \nAbout this webinar:\nEvery parent benefits from a strong support network—especially families adopting older children or children with a history of trauma. This training provides a foundational understanding of trauma and its impact on children\, along with simple\, practical strategies for short-term care as a secondary caregiver. Participants will leave feeling more confident\, prepared\, and equipped to support their loved ones as they build their families through adoption. \nThis training will be led by a team of experienced Barker clinicians\, including Adoption-Competent Therapist Elana Lindner\, Adoption Placement and Clinical Manager Marilyn Rippetoe\, and Director of Adoption Programs Saara McEachnie. \nLocation: Virtual event \nDate and time: Fri\, Jan 30\, 2026 12:00 PM – 1:00 PM \nOrganizer: The Barker Adoption Foundation\, (301) 664-9664\, vdownes@barkerfoundation.org \nSign up for this FREE CEU webinar

SUMMARY:Considerations in Transracial Adoption Training (December 2025)
DESCRIPTION:Making the decision to parent a child of a different race than you is one that comes with many responsibilities.  \nWhether you are a pre-adoptive parent considering transracial adoption or already parenting transracially we invite you to join our upcoming parent education training: Considerations in Transracial Adoption on Saturday\, December 6th\, 2025 from 10A to 4:30P ET. During these all-day virtual workshops\, adoption expert Dr. Nabina Liebow will provide the necessary tools to begin thinking about the obligations you have\, as parents\, to your transracially adopted children. \nUpon completion of this workshop\, parents should have a clearer idea of what they need to do to start their life long journey of fulfilling these obligations. We know that without ongoing critical thought\, dialogue\, and action with regard to these obligations\, transracially adopted children can suffer psychologically. The goal of this class is to help parents get prepared to best enter into this journey. \nBy attending you will have the opportunity to:\n\nMeet other parents who are considering transracial parenting\, or who are already parenting children of a different race than themselves\nExplore the various reason that people choose a transracial adoption\nIncrease racial literacy & deepen understanding of race and racism\nUnderstand parental obligations in transracial adoption\nMake a game plan for “what’s next” as you continue to parent your child of color\, or consider adopting a child of color\n\nLocation: Virtual event\nDate and time: Sat\, Dec 6\, 2025 10:00 AM – 4:30 PM\nOrganizer: Virginia Downes\, (301) 664-9664\, vdownes@barkeradoptionfoundation.org \nAbout the presenter:\nDr. Nabina Liebow is an international\, transracial adoptee and ethicist.  She is passionate about her work in transracial adoption and ultimately hopes that attendees of the workshop can be exposed to tools for thinking\, talking\, and “feeling” about race;  will have the opportunity to better understand the perspective of transracial adoptees; will be pushed to examine their own racial perspectives\, and ultimately will walk away with a better understanding of the obligations they have\, as white parents\, to their children of color. \nDon’t miss this valuable opportunity and register today!\nRegister Now!
