Meet John

A joyful, expressive boy who needs a calm,
committed parent ready to advocate for him for life.

John is featured through PWNL+ because his needs require specialized recruitment and a family experienced with complex medical and developmental care. We prioritize inquiries from families who are prepared for lifelong advocacy.

Age: 12
Diagnoses: Autism (non-verbal), Cerebral Palsy, Hip Dysplasia
School Setting: Self-contained classroom with 1:1 aide

Featured through Barker’s PWNL+ initiative.

Who is John?

John’s sweet smile is a sure-fire way to brighten your day. As his foster mom shares:

“John is a very sweet, loving child who adores being tickled and loved on. His laughter is contagious and will melt your heart.”

John laughs easily. He claps and bobs his head when he’s happy. He hums along in his own special way while watching Cocomelon. He loves flipping through Diary of a Wimpy Kid books and is very protective of them.

He enjoys:

  • Riding in the car with the window down to feel the breeze
  • Swinging outside in his saucer swing
  • Popsicles and Nutty Buddy bars
  • Cartoons and NASCAR
  • Time on his tablet

He wakes up in a good mood.

The enviornment
where John thrives

John does best in calm, predictable environments. He does not tolerate loud, chaotic settings well. When noise escalates, he may cover his ears and cry. He thrives on routine — and once established, it should remain steady.

He needs:

  • Consistency
  • Low sensory stimulation
  • Gentle transitions
  • Careful supervision outdoors

John thrives in calm, structured homes rather than high-energy or chaotic environments.

POWNL+ John

John’s abilities

  • Walk (with leg braces for support)
  • Feed himself (with reminders)
  • Dress himself with assistance
  • Sleep independently (with a gated bed)
  • Participate in school with a 1:1 aide
John can: He is not potty trained and wears diapers. He currently receives speech therapy but may benefit from expanded services and AAC tools to increase communication.

Medical and Long-term considerations

John has hip dysplasia and will require knee surgery to support leg alignment and hip replacement surgery in the future.

He will require strong medical advocacy and post-surgical support. John will not be able to live independently as an adult. This is a lifelong parenting commitment.

Financial Support

John’s placing state is committed to ensuring financial barriers do not prevent the right family from stepping forward. There is currently a stipend per day for his care that will continue with an adoptive family prior to finalization. This adoption subsidy is negotiable and may be adjusted to reflect ongoing needs.

Through PWNL+:

  • Most program fees are covered by the placing agency.
  • Families generally spend less than $500 in administrative approval costs.
  • Financial support exists to promote stability, but families must be prepared for the emotional, physical, and advocacy commitment required.
