Barker is pleased to be starting a new discussion group for parents who have internationally adopted children. The group will meet monthly and will cover a variety of issues including (but not limited to):  transracial adoption, talking about adoption with your child, integrating the child’s birth culture in the family, fostering a spirit of openness about birth family, building positive self-esteem, answering with questions from others, and family dynamics.

The new group is geared toward parents of internationally adopted children who are 12 or younger. Parents of children 13 and over are welcome to attend Barker’s Parents of Adopted Adolescents and High School Aged Teens Group, which meets on the first Tuesday of each month (please see Barker’s website for more information).

The group will be facilitated by Varda Makovsky, Barker’s Director of Family and Post-Adoption Services. Participants are welcome to attend regularly or come on a drop-in basis. Meetings will be held on the first Wednesday of every month from 7:30 -9:00 PM at Barker’s Bethesda office, located at 7979 Old Georgetown Road, Bethesda, Maryland. The fee to attend is $15 per meeting.

The first meeting will be on Wednesday, May 4th from 7:30-9:00 PM. To RSVP please contact postadopt [at] barkerfoundation.org. Free parking is available behind the building. The lot is accessed from Auburn Street right behind the gas station at the corner of Auburn and Old Georgetown.
